Our Outpatient Physiotherapy Team

Matthew Carr, Chartered Physiotherapist (MSK Operations Manager)

Matthew qualified from the University of Southampton in 2004. He has gained extensive experience in both NHS and private physiotherapy, specialising at an early stage in his career in the management of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. Before joining the Horder Centre, Matthew worked as a MSK team leader for a busy inner London NHS Trust, providing treatment to patients with acute and chronic MSK conditions as well as providing regular education to local GP’s.

Alongside his NHS work, Matthew has gained valuable experience in the management of sports injuries, having worked part time in a nationally recognised Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) private physiotherapy clinic for over 4 years. He was regularly involved in the screening of players pre-season to prevent injury as well as utilising extensive manual, hands-on techniques and sports-specific rehabilitation to help players return to sport as quickly as possible.

Matthew believes strongly in identifying and addressing the primary causes of people’s pain and not just treating the symptoms present. He is passionate about educating the patient so that they are fully informed in the treatment options available to them. He has been qualified in the use of acupuncture in the treatment of MSK problems since 2004 and is currently completing his second Masters-level module, working towards a post-graduate certificate in advanced physiotherapy.  

Debra Stork, Chartered Physiotherapist (Team Leader)

Debra graduated from Brunel University in 1996. She has gained invaluable experience in both the NHS and Private Sector in the assessment and management of both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions and post surgical rehabilitation.

Debra believes strongly in the effectiveness of hands –on treatment such as joint mobilisation and soft tissue massage. She is also an advocate for patie nt education and endeavours to teach her clients corrective exercise, self-management and injury prevention skills.

She is qualified in sports and therapeutic massage and is a qualified Modified Pilates Instructor with The Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute (APPI).

Hannah Cottingham, Chartered Physiotherapist

Hannah graduated from Brunel University in 2006.  She has worked at The Horder Centre since 2005 as Physiotherapy Assistant then as a Bank Physiotherapist from 2006 becoming a full time member of the Outpatient Physiotherapy team in 2010.  Hannah has gained experience working in the NHS and sports sectors since qualification and was Lead physiotherapist at Eastbourne RFC from 2009-2011.

Throughout her training Hannah has gained further qualifications in wound management, suturing and hydrotherapy. She believes strongly in hands-on manual therapies, patient education and self management. She is a trained Acupuncturist and a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP) while regularly using this as an adjunct alongside other physiotherapy interventions.

Hannah is now extending her physiotherapy role working within the Back Clinic, a service for the assessment of back pain led by Mr Guy Selmon (Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon), at The Horder Centre.

Guy Coughlan, Chartered Physiotherapist

Guy graduated as a physiotherapist from the University of Brighton in 2010. After graduating, Guy completed his junior rotations at East Sussex Hospitals Trust where he developed a keen interest in MSK Outpatients working at both the Conquest Hospital and Eastbourne District General in this capacity.

Guy has a keen interest in Sports Physiotherapy and also has BSc and MSc degrees in Sport and Exercise Science. Guy has previously worked with several sports clubs within the fields of golf and football including Lewes Football Club and Cooden Beach Golf Club. Most recently, Guy has spent the last two seasons the FA centre of Excellence at Brighton Football Club developing a sports injury clinic for the players. Here, Guy has gained experience on injury prevention, sports screening and rehabilitation from acute injuries.

Anne Marie Pier, Chartered Physiotherapist

Anne-Marie graduated from the University of Brighton in 2009. She joined The Horder Centre in November 2009 as a member of the Inpatient physiotherapy team, working with post-operative patients until joining the Outpatient team in 2011.

During her time as a student, Anne-Marie gained experience in many different areas of physiotherapy in the NHS across the South East, developing a particular interest in the treatment and management of sports injuries and hydrotherapy.

Since 2011, Anne-Marie has been working with Brighton and Hove Albion Girls’ Centre of Excellence offering pitch-side physiotherapy support on match days for the girls aged 11-17. In the near future Anne-Marie is hoping to embark on further training to continue to diversify her skills.

Michael Anderson, Chartered Physiotherapist

Michael graduated from the University of Brighton in 2009 after completing his MSc in Rehabilitation Science. He has worked at The Horder Centre from January 2010 –July 2011 as an in-patient physiotherapist, providing him with a wealth of experience in post-op rehabilitation.

He is now a member of the out-patient physiotherapy team where he brings his fitness and sports injury experience as the lead physiotherapist for the England Men’s U16 Basketball team, who recently brought home a silver medal and promotion to Division-A after a successful 2010/11 European Championships in Strumica (Macedonia).

Prior to his post-graduate degree, Michael worked as a fitness instructor/personal trainer after completing a BSc Sports and Exercise Science at the University of Brighton in 2005 which enables him to bring experience in exercise prescription, goal-setting, and psychosocial elements of physiotherapy into his current job role.

Gemma Godber, Chartered Physiotherapist

Gemma graduated from the University of Cardiff in 2008 gaining her BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy and has since been working within the NHS. She has completed the core rotations gaining vast musculoskeletal experience. 

Within the NHS Gemma also worked in hand therapy, gaining experience in the assessment and treatment of complex hand injuries. She brings this wealth of experience to assist with the management of hand patients at the Horder Centre.

Alongside working within the NHS, Gemma worked at the Horder Centre as a member of the bank therapy team within the inpatient department. This provided her with valuable experience in post-op rehabilitation.

Gemma’s keen interest now lies within Outpatient therapy and she is now a member of the Outpatient team here at the Horder Centre. Gemma has worked with a number of men’s and ladies football teams across Sussex providing her with valuable sports injury management experience to bring to her new role within the department.

Pascalle Smith, Senior Hand Therapist

Pascalle graduated from University of Southampton in 2000.  After completing junior rotations in spinal injuries, stroke rehabilitation and mental health she became senior hand therapist at Wessex Rehabilitation Unit in Salisbury Hospital.  In 2004 she continued as a senior therapist at Queen Victoria Hospital East Grinstead gaining experience in the assessment and treatment of complex hand conditions/injuries.  In 2008 she became a private practitioner with Hand Therapy Specialists Ltd. working with The Horder Centre.  She has specialised skills in splinting, exercise prescription and improving hand function.  Also, in 2008 Pascalle gained a Diploma in Hand Therapy from the University of Derby.  Pascalle values continuing professional development and evidence-based practice and is currently undertaking clinical research into splinting and thumb tendon injuries.
