THERAPY Hand therapy specialists provide assessment and holistic rehabilitation for patients who have sustained a hand or upper limb injury. The treatment is tailored to suit the individual and focuses on returning the patient to the functional activities that they enjoyed prior to the onset of the injury or condition.
Our Therapist is a fully qualified Occupational Therapist with extensive experience in dealing with hand injuries. Therefore, we are able to offer a professional service with the utmost quality of care. To ensure individual attention we offer a one-to-one treatment at all times.
Our clinic is in a safe, comfortable environment with close contact to other health professional staff.
Our services are available for anyone with injuries to the hand, wrist or forearm. This may be following surgery or an ongoing complaint of the hand. Patients may self-pay or be referred under the NHS by their GP or specialist consultant.
ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT
Initially the therapist will administer objective assessments of the upper limb function including movement, strength and sensation.
Treatment is tailored to the individual and varies depending on the condition. The therapist may utilise the following tools:
- Static and dynamic splinting
- Dressing changes and wound check
- Education regarding surgery or condition
- Joint mobilizations
- Home exercise programmes
- Management of scars and swelling
- Custom made pressure garments
- Strengthening
- Ultrasound
- Sensory re-education
HAND CONDITIONS / INJURIES Patients may be referred following trauma or elective hand surgery including:
- Tendon repairs and transfers
- Peripheral nerve repairs
- Fractures
- Burns
- Joint replacements and fusions
- Dupuytrens release
- Replant / revascularization
- Grafts / Flaps
Patients may develop hand problems from degenerative changes, congenital abnormalities or from injury whereby hand therapy may prevent surgical intervention:
- Pain syndromes
- Hypertrophic scarring
- Arthritis
- Nerve compression syndromes
- Tenosynovitis
- Joint stiffness or contractures
- Ligament injury
