ESCAPE – Knee Pain: Enabling Self-management & Coping with Arthritic Knee Pain through Exercise

Knee pain associated with osteoarthritis affects over 4½ million people in the UK and has a significant impact on the quality of their lives.

The majority of patients with knee pain are treated with medication. However, there is supporting evidence to suggest a combined exercise and self-management programme help patients in coping more effectively with their symptoms in the long-term and encourage prolonged active lifestyles.

The ESCAPE Programme runs over six weeks, with patients attending 1 x weekly session lasting for about an hour. Prior to starting the programme we will send you an assessment form for you to complete and return which will give us important information about you and your knee pain.

Each session consists of a group discussion of a designated topic followed by a period of exercise designed to improve strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and co-ordination, and cardiovascular fitness. At the end of your treatment you will be sent a questionnaire to evaluate and measure the outcomes achieved.
