Professional Profile

Mr Butler-Manuel began his training at St Thomas’s hospital, London qualifying in 1981. His orthopaedic training was on the Guy’s and St Thomas’s training scheme and he worked in Hastings, Brighton and Swindon. He was appointed a Consultant at the Conquest Hospital Hastings in 1993. Mr Butler-Manuel’s special interest is knee surgery and he performs large numbers of primary and revision replacements plus arthroscopic and ligament reconstruction surgery. He was appointed clinical lead for orthopaedics at the Conquest in 2007. He regularly presents and teaches at international knee forums.

Mr Butler-Manuel and Mr Hugh Apthorp (who also works at The Horder Centre) have developed a dedicated lower limb research unit who carry out audit, manage the national joint registry for the Trust and research based modernisation of services provided through long-term follow-up, patient satisfaction monitoring and clinical recommendations for good practice.

Personal Profile

Mr Butler-Manuel is married to a Consultant Radiologist and has three children. When he finds the time, he enjoys sporting activities, especially tennis and golf. In his youth, Mr Butler-Manuel was a keen footballer but now has to make do with watching his sons play, watching television and the occasional 5-a-side game!
